A little movement

34
Our current project was born out of necessity.  The Club needed to address the contaminated turf around the greens, turkey heads.  Once we began looking at the scope of work, additional details began to be added, one being expanding the greens back to their former size and shape.  We asked the contractors who bid on the job to give us two bid proposals.  Option A is the work currently being done and Option B including the expansions of the greens.  The difference in the costs was significant and the Club decided to proceed with a modified Option A.

Five of our greens are being expanded 4, 5, 9, 11, and 14.  Because the turf surrounding greens 4, 5, and 14 are bentgrass/poa annua, we are able to simply adjust sod lines and mowing patterns to achieve our goals.  9 and 11 are a different story, I'll get into some more detail once we begin working on these two greens.  For the other three the work is quite simple.  For the areas of expansion, paint and pin flags are used to identify the work area and the contractor moves portions of the putting surface from one area to another.  No excavation of soil is needed since the areas are small and there is no contamination with bermudagrass.  Since these new areas have received little in the way of cultural practices, we will need to pay close attention to the health of the turf.  Especially as we head into the heat of the summer.
