Summer necessities

Today we had the opportunity to close the course to perform some needed cultural practices.  As we do from time to time, we vented the greens allowing them a chance to open up and breath.  After our recent rainfall and prep for the Member/Guest, they were ready for a breath of fresh air.  Greens can be vented with many different tines.  Today we used bayonet tines which are basically knife blades attached to the aerifier that will allow better gas exchange of Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen in the root zone. This practice is of minimum disruption to golfers and will heal in a couple days. We followed the venting with a light topdressing and some "food", micro nutrients and calcium.

In addition to the work performed on the greens, we verticut all the fairways.  This is our second go around of performing the practice this year.  Verticutting has proven to be a huge benefit in the playability and health of the fairways.  The bermudagrass loves it this time of the year.  With verticutting our main goal is to eliminate thatch and encourage the plant to grow more vertically.
