Our staff members basically take care of it all. Aside from performing routine maintenance on the golf course, they can find themselves in some interesting situations. Since we are located in the mountains of Western North Carolina, the items they always seem to find is poison ivy, oak and sumac. Due to the climate here these plants seem to be everywhere. Just this season I believe we are at 100% for each staff member having a reaction, some even needing medical attention. In July our monthly staff meeting dealt with better identification of the plant material, steps to avoid exposure (besides not handling it) and post exposure treatment. Many of our duties take us into areas where this poisonous plant thrives. We cannot simply ignore the task, but we can be better prepared when we encounter it and take appropriate measures to decrease the chances of having a reaction.
