So, the majority of the turf blogs today made reference to the amount of rain that has inundated their respected golf courses. I figured that I better report our recent deluge too. July has blessed us with 8.25" of rain resulting in cancelled holiday events at the club and about a week of missed work on the course. The Member/Guest starts Thursday so we certainly have our work cut out for us. Today was good as no rain has fallen, yet. Tees, some fairways and rough were mowed for the first time in over a week. Fortunately, we have some dedicated staff members who hung around last week waiting for windows in the weather to get the greens mown a couple times.
The wet weather and added humidity has increased our disease pressure on all types of turf. The Bermudagrass fairways have seen the most noticeable outbreaks of Dollar Spot and Helminthosporium leaf spot. Since we do not preventively treat our fairways for disease we occasionally will be under attack. Both diseases can be controlled. We'll add a bit of fertility to grow out of the Dollar Spot, and the Helminthosporium leaf spot should recover once good turf growing conditions return.
