Seasonal Changes

34

Over the weekend mother nature must have known that the first day of Autumn is tomorrow because the weather quickly changed and the extended forecast says were here to stay.  Almost instantly summer humidity is gone, leaves are changing, and cool crisp mornings are leading to beautiful fall type weather.
On the golf course we are responding to this change also by refocusing some of our attention as we prepare for fall and inevitably winter.  A few highlights. Fertility has been applied to the turf, helping it store carbohydrates, as it prepares for dormancy and eventually reemerging in the spring.  Pre-emergence herbicides have been applied to the bermudagrass fairways and collars to hold off unwanted poa annua and other winter annuals.  Re-seeding cool season bunker faces and rough that have been dinged up by heat and disease.  The Driving Range Tee has been overseeded;, thank you to everyone abiding by the "Mats Only" signs.  And finally, the height of cut (HOC) on fairways and collars has gone up. This gives the turf a bit of added protection throughout its dormant stage.
Fall is a spectacular time of the year for golf, and the greens are at their absolute finest.  After another successful summer, fall should be our swan song.
