NOAA issues long range weather forecasts, the Farmers Almanac uses a locked up recipe to predict the next seasons weather, but at the end of the day we're given what we're given and the Golf Course Superintendent must respond accordingly. All Superintendents put their golf courses to bed with proper care and diligent planning based on successes and failures of previous years. We do the same here at HCC. I like the basics of our program, but I was looking for an added security blanket for our bermudagrass approaches this fall. Last spring these areas incurred some winter damage. A product called Turf Screen, which was developed by a Superintendent, was brought to my attention as a option for our fall program. Turf Screen is known for its ability to help protect turf during the heat of the summer. Now the product is being used for winter protection as well; increased cold weather tolerance and decreased turf desiccation. The product is easy to apply and cost effective, so this fall we tried it on our approaches and we'll evaluate how they look after breaking dormancy in the spring. So, next time you are at the Club and you notice the blue/green color on the approaches, it's Turf Screen helping to protect our turf.
